Earthineer Electric Car

by Ben N on October 4, 2011

Just over a week ago, I was at a ski resort in Pennsylvania at the Mother Earth News Fair, giving a presentation on how I built my own electric motorcycle.

A while back, I wondered why they didn’t ask me to also give a presentation on my electric car. Did they have someone else giving a presentation on electric cars? If fact, they did. It was Dan and Don Adams from over at Earthineer.

Theirs was one of several unique cars on display at the event, including two X-Prize contenders!

Electric car based on VW Bug, with fiberglass body

The car itself is very basic, as most EVs usually are. And I mean that in the best possible way. Instead of the octopus of hoses, pipes, filters, and hot noisy parts of a typical infernal combustion engine, this car just has batteries, a motor controller, and a VERY compact electric motor on the far back end.

However, Dan and Don can explain the entire project much better than I can, as they do in this video of their presentation.

A four-wheeler is very similar to a motorcycle is most ways. The same information will help you convert a four-wheeler to electric. The main difference is that an ATV is going to have a basic transmission/differential in there, instead of just a plain chain. The car DVD covers working with the existing transmission.
